The fight between Germany and the Soviet Union that began with Operation Barbarossa in 1941 is famous for the severe winters that the Germans found so difficult to handle, particularly in the first year. The Soviets too suffered in the winter, but experience gained from their attempted invasion of Finland, plus the many units stationed in the east of the country, gave them a significant advantage, and well equipped and trained ski troops such as those in this set went a long way to turn the tide of war, starting with the pushing back of German troops from Moscow.

There were several styles of snow suits used in the Red Army at this time, but the two-piece style worn here is very typical and everything is fine accuracy-wise. Most have rifles but one has a submachine gun, and we really liked all of the poses. Since this is a game piece there are only four poses, and only five figures in the whole box, but if placed on the single base as shown here. then they make a very fine little group. There are no individual bases, but of course the skis make these very easy to stand on their own anyway. Naturally such complex poses cannot be done with a single piece, so there is a bit more than the usual amount of assembly here, but the results are excellent. The sculpting is beyond reproach as always, so those already familiar with the Zvezda style and quality will find no surprises here.
