Austria's involvement in World War II began with its annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938, an event known as the Anschluss. This annexation effectively erased Austria as an independent nation and integrated its territory and people into the Third Reich. Austrian citizens were conscripted into the German military and participated in various capacities throughout the war. Many Austrians served in the Wehrmacht, the SS, and other Nazi organizations, contributing to Germany's war efforts. Vienna and other Austrian cities became important logistical hubs and industrial centers for the German war machine. Additionally, Austria was the site of several concentration camps, including the notorious Mauthausen-Gusen camp complex, where tens of thousands of prisoners were subjected to brutal forced labor and extermination. Resistance within Austria existed but was relatively limited and suppressed by the Gestapo and other Nazi security forces. The country endured significant devastation from Allied bombings and the eventual invasion by Soviet and Western Allied forces. After the war, Austria was occupied and divided into zones controlled by the Allies until it regained independence in 1955 with the signing of the Austrian State Treaty, which re-established Austria as a neutral and sovereign state.
