Initially neutral, Bulgaria joined the Axis in 1941 under pressure from Germany but notably did not declare war on the Soviet Union. It participated in the occupation of Yugoslavia and Greece, fielding around 300,000 troops. Bulgaria’s army was primarily equipped with German and older domestic weapons and included armored vehicles, artillery, and a small but capable air force. In 1944, with Soviet forces advancing, Bulgaria switched sides and declared war on Germany—fighting with the Allies for the remainder of the war. This dual role makes Bulgaria a compelling wildcard in Global War 1936 campaigns.
