The Cassone Battlecruiser was a proposed design which attempted to produce a Battlecruiser with a very unique armor system. To save on weight and allow high speeds they would employ two concepts. First, heavily sloped armor that was thin (152mm) near the main deck, and thick (456mm) near the water line. The idea is the shell detonates on the armor, then the slope nullifies the following explosion by forcing it down (in this case to the water). This was only over vital spaces though, non-vital parts would have most likely been un-armored. Sort of all-or-nothing. Heavy sloped armor became much more regular in tanks. The second is the two large budges on the outside of the hull. These are essentially gas filled tanks with a hard backing that would allow the torpedo to penetrate into them, then detonate it before reaching the machinery/magazine. The explosion of the torpedo would then be forced upwards though vents around the funnels. In theory the idea could have prevented damage to the ship, but there are numerous flaws.
