A telegraph pole is a tall wooden post that supports the wires of a telegraph system. The first documented use of wood poles for telegraphs was in 1844, when Samuel Morse received a grant from the U.S. Congress to build a 40-mile telegraph line between Baltimore and Washington D.C. The success of the telegraph wires led to the use of poles for electricity distribution wires.
