Denmark's experience during World War II was marked by occupation and resistance. On April 9, 1940, Germany launched Operation Weserubung, swiftly invading Denmark, which capitulated within hours due to the overwhelming force and to avoid unnecessary destruction. Despite the occupation, Denmark retained a degree of political autonomy under German oversight, and the Danish government initially cooperated with the occupiers. However, as the war progressed and German demands intensified, Danish resistance grew. The underground resistance movement conducted sabotage operations and aided in the rescue of Danish Jews, who were successfully ferried to neutral Sweden in October 1943, saving around 7,200 lives. By 1943, the Danish government resigned, refusing further cooperation, and Germany imposed direct military rule. The Danish resistance continued to disrupt German operations until the country's liberation in May 1945.
