The Great Way or Dadao Government, formally the Great Way Municipal Government of Shanghai, was a short-lived puppet government proclaimed in Pudong on December 5, 1937, to administer Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Dadao

The Dadao is a traditional Chinese sword. A short, chopping weapon, it is designed to be used with both hands. It had a long association with law enforcement and the maintenance of public order, most frequently being seen in the hands of police or militia personnel or indeed official executioners. Even the police were empowered to summarily execute people apprehended while committing a crime. This simultaneously shocked and fascinated Western visitors to China. Souvenir photograph albums brought back by them often feature images of beheadings. During the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-45 Dadaos were carried by some Chinese soldiers. A unit armed with them gained fame at the Marco Polo Bridge Incident which started the war. This was celebrated in a patriotic song 'The Sword March' which starts with the line 'Our swords raised over the devils' heads, hack 'em off!' Some propaganda was made regarding the prowess of Chinese 'Big Sword' units. It would appear, however, that maintaining public order remained the main purpose of the Dadao, rather than regular frontline fighting.
