ID: Plastic halftrack gaming piece: Zis-42 Halftrack piece from the game Axis & Allies Europe 40-2nd Ed.
The Story of the ZIS-42: Though not as well known for them as the Germans and Americans, the Soviets made a fair number of halftracks during the war, too. The Soviet designs were rather different than the better known German and Sd. Kfz. 251 or American M3 half-tracks, which were basically purpose-designed armored personnel carriers that were then adapted to many other uses. The Soviet designs more closely resembled the German Sd. Kfz. 4/ Opel Maultier, which was more of a cargo-oriented vehicle. Like it, in fact, it was pretty much a straightforward conversion of a standard cargo truck into a half-track. About 6,000 of them were made, which was a testimony that they had at least some utility in coping with the bad Russian roads and weather was a substantial number, though only a fraction of the number produced by the Germans or Americans (or of the number or ordinary trucks made by the Soviets.)
Usage Notes: Use this piece for “Global 1939†and “Invasion of Italy†Variants as either a mechanized infantry or truck unit (depending on your own “House Rules†preference.)
