Norway's role in World War II was marked by its strategic importance and the fierce resistance of its people against German occupation. In April 1940, Germany launched Operation Weserubung, invading Norway to secure its iron ore shipments from Sweden and to establish naval and air bases to control the North Atlantic. Despite being swiftly occupied, Norway never formally surrendered, and the Norwegian government and royal family escaped to the United Kingdom, where they continued to lead the resistance efforts. Norwegian forces, along with a significant merchant fleet, contributed to the Allied war effort. The resistance movement within Norway conducted sabotage operations, intelligence gathering, and guerrilla warfare, significantly disrupting German operations. Notably, the Norwegian resistance played a crucial role in halting the German atomic bomb project by sabotaging the heavy water production at the Vemork plant. Norway's strategic location and the resilience of its people made it a significant front in the fight against the Axis powers.
