Historical Background
In February 1945, U.S. forces launched Operation Detachment, the assault on Iwo Jima, only 660 miles from Tokyo. Over 20,000 Japanese defenders under Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi had transformed the island into a fortress of bunkers, tunnels, and hidden artillery. For 36 days, Marines fought yard by yard through volcanic ash and fortified positions, enduring nearly 7,000 killed and 20,000 wounded. Japanese resistance was equally fierce, with only 216 survivors out of more than 20,000 defenders. The island was finally declared secure on March 26, 1945.
