Historical Setting
In September 1944, U.S. forces of the 81st “Wildcats” Infantry Division invaded Angaur, one of the Palau Islands, as part of Operation Stalemate II. Defended by Major Ushio Goto and the battle-hardened troops of Japan’s 14th Division, the island became a fortress of caves, ridges, and fortified beaches. For 36 days, the Americans battled to secure the island, finally ending Japanese resistance on October 22, 1944.
