OPERATION STALEMATE II: BATTLE OF PELELIU
Axis & Allies® Style | Historical Board Gaming Original
Recreate one of the most grueling island battles of the Pacific War with Operation Stalemate II: Battle of Peleliu, a stand-alone wargame powered by the proven HBG Okinawa rules system. Designed for fans of Axis & Allies®-style games and serious wargamers, this title puts you in command of the U.S. 1st Marine Division and 81st Infantry Division against the entrenched forces of Imperial Japan in one of the most savage campaigns of 1944.
Historical Background
By mid-1944, U.S. victories in the Central Pacific brought the war within striking distance of Japan’s home islands. Admiral Chester Nimitz ordered the invasion of the Palau Islands, code-named Operation Stalemate II, with Peleliu and Angaur as the primary objectives.
Defending Peleliu was Lt. Col. Kunio Nakagawa, who ordered extensive defensive fortifications, caves, and underground tunnels across the island’s rugged terrain. On September 15, 1944, the U.S. Marines landed under withering fire after three days of ineffective naval bombardment. What was expected to be a quick fight instead became a drawn-out nightmare. The battle dragged on for 73 days, ending only after Nakagawa’s ritual death on November 24, 1944, when he admitted, “Our sword is broken and we have run out of spears.”
