The Republican side included not only government forces but anarchist and socialist trade unions.  Many militias were not under direct Government control, belonging to whatever labor union or local forces raised them. Many militia lacked discipline as well as artillery and support weapons.

Spain built a number of I-16 fighter aircraft under license from the Soviet Union.  Aircraft were purchased abroad some transferred to the Republican side through arms merchants in Belgium and Communist supporters in Mexico.

The international communist movement took great interest in the Spanish Civil War.   Somewhere between 30,000-32,000 foreign fighters travelled to Spain to fight for the communist cause.   The fighters came in all sorts – communists, anarchists, unemployed workers, and adventurers.  Though France remained neutral, the French communist party supported recruitment and provided uniforms.  Brigades underwent intensive training and were well disciplined and highly motivated.

In the Spanish Civil War, Stalin saw opportunity, not only to advance communism but to let the European powers exhaust themselves.

These rules are written Global War - 2nd edition, however at the end of this document are a few changes necessary to play these with Global War 1st edition or Axis and Allies 1940.

All of our sets are labeled with a set designator for reference in other rule sets.

After purchasing the majority of the expansions available, I have to say that this is probably the most important expansion as it relates to impact on the outcome of the game. Came with plenty of pieces and roundels, many historically accurate. Highly recommended.

Lets be clear, if you are playing the game from 1936 on, then this expansion is fun to add. It will change how your setup would be had you started in 1939. You also need to have the armies that come with it. Great addition. I've not purchased the Spanish Civil War map yet but I will be. You can only spend so much at one time. The map for Spain looks amazing.
