During World War II, the Swiss Army maintained a position of armed neutrality, a stance Switzerland had adopted and upheld for centuries. Despite being surrounded by Axis and Allied powers, Switzerland successfully avoided direct involvement in the conflict. The Swiss military, under General Henri Guisan, implemented a comprehensive defense strategy known as the National Redoubt, which involved fortifying the Alps and preparing for a last stand in the mountainous heart of the country. The army was mobilized and remained on high alert throughout the war, with a substantial portion of the male population serving in various capacities. Swiss soldiers were well-trained and equipped, and the nation’s terrain provided a formidable natural defense. Additionally, the Swiss maintained a rigorous policy of airspace defense, shooting down aircraft that violated their neutrality. While Switzerland's armed forces did not engage in large-scale combat, their readiness and strategic planning played a crucial role in deterring potential invasions and preserving the country's sovereignty during one of the most tumultuous periods in history.
