Over the last quarter, I made three purchases of miniatures. They are allowing me to extend my first edition Axis & Allies to play the 2nd Edition rules with additional pieces purchased from HBG. Adding artillery, destroyers, and cruisers allows for newer version rules. The availability of the individual pieces by color and type was also very useful in as much as we introduced paratroops to Axis & Allies by using DeHaviland bombers as jump planes, and different ground troops to designate paratroops.
Additionally, we have invented a version of Axis & Allies that is similar to Risk in that each player starts on an island on opposing sides of the board and then takes and holds territories. This game required more ships and aircraft of all kinds and we were able to use HBG pieces to augment the pieces already provided in Axis & Allies.
Only negative comment would be the disappointment of finding so many pieces out of stock. I would recommend that when someone hits an out-of-stock Axis & Allies miniature, that your catalog link them to the individual units by color and type. I found these only later in my searches, and would certainly have made different choices had I known of these available individual units (packaged in 5-packs) earlier in my shopping cycle.
Overall I am very satisfied with my purchases, and will buy more pieces in the future to extend other historical strategy games.
