Boeing B17 “Flying Fortress†Strategic Bomber
ID: Plastic “bomber†gaming piece: Boeing B17 “Flying Fortress†strategic bomber from the game Axis & Allies Europe 40 & Pacific 40.
The Story of the B17 Heavy Bomber: Boeing’s B-17 “Flying Fortress†was the most famous US bomber of the war and a legend in its own time. As its official nickname was meant to imply, it was designed to sustain extensive battle damage and still return home and with 13 .50-caliber machine guns, it was a deadly plane to attack as well. The second-most produced US bomber of the war (only the B-24 Liberator being made in larger numbers) it was also exceptional in its high operational ceiling, long range and enormous bomb load. In fact, despite competing with other US and British heavy bomber designs in the European theatre, the B-17 ended up being the design that dropped the most bombs on Germany, and ended up being the US bomber design to drop the most bombers in any theater throughout the war.
Usage Notes: Use this piece for “Global 1939†and “Invasion of Italy†Variants as a strategic bomber unit. Other US aircraft of interest may be: the Lockheed P-38 Fighter, the Grumman F6F Hellcat Fighter, & Douglass SBD Dauntless Tactical Bomber.
