The Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) played a significant role in World War II, operating across the Mediterranean. Italian marines, known as "San Marco Marines" (Battaglione San Marco), were elite naval infantry specializing in amphibious assaults, coastal defense, and commando operations. They participated in key battles, including the defense of Tobruk and operations in North Africa and the Balkans. Highly trained and well-disciplined, they were Italy’s equivalent to the British Royal Marines or U.S. Marines. Despite limited resources, they earned a reputation for bravery and resilience in combat.
