Australian AC-4 Sentinel Medium Tank

The Australian AC4 was a proposed development within the Australian Cruiser tank program, following the AC1 Sentinel and experimental work with more powerful armament. Designers explored mounting the British 17-pounder to give the tank improved anti-armor capability. The program ended without AC4 production, as Australia obtained Allied tanks through other arrangements. The AC4 differed from the AC1 vehicles actually built and from later interpretations of its intended final configuration. Australian industrial capacity was asked to produce complex armored equipment under wartime pressure. Changes in Allied supply and strategic circumstances altered the value of continuing an independent production program. Australian tank development depended on machinery, armament, and industrial capacity available locally.
