Description
B-47 Stratojet Bomber
The Boeing B-47 Stratojet was a major early American jet bomber, combining swept wings with engines carried in underwing pods. It entered service during the 1950s and formed a central part of Strategic Air Command’s nuclear force. Its configuration influenced later large jet-aircraft design, but operating demands and the development of newer threats limited its frontline career. Reconnaissance versions and other adaptations extended the family beyond the original bomber mission. Swept wings, podded jet engines, and bicycle-style landing gear gave the aircraft an unmistakable form. A small crew managed a large nuclear-strike aircraft through demanding mission profiles. Its service helped establish Strategic Air Command’s jet-bomber practices before longer-ranged successors assumed the principal intercontinental role.
