Description
British Boulton Paul Defiant
The Boulton Paul Defiant was a British two-seat fighter whose main armament was concentrated in a powered gun turret behind the pilot. It initially entered daylight fighter operations but proved vulnerable when opposed by modern single-seat fighters. The type found a more suitable role in night fighting before newer radar-equipped aircraft displaced it. The turret-fighter concept assumed opportunities to bring concentrated fire onto enemy bombers without relying on forward-firing guns aimed by the pilot. Combat against agile single-seat fighters exposed serious weaknesses in that assumption. The Defiant’s later night-fighting role shows how a design could find useful employment after its original daylight concept proved unsuitable.
