British Lancaster MK1 Bomber Special-Bomb
The Lancaster’s ability to carry unusually large weapons made it important to British special-bomb development. Modified aircraft delivered weapons such as Tallboy and Grand Slam against hardened targets, but those adaptations differed from the earlier Dambuster configuration.
Barnes Wallis’s Tallboy and Grand Slam were heavy penetrating bombs intended to attack structures that ordinary bombing often failed to destroy. Carrying the larger weapons required changes to aircraft equipment and bomb-bay arrangements, with Grand Slam demanding particularly extensive adaptation. No. 617 Squadron became strongly associated with these attacks. The separate Upkeep bouncing bomb used against the Ruhr dams in 1943 required its own installation. Different Lancaster special-weapon configurations therefore represent distinct operations and engineering solutions.
