Description
British Merchant Aircraft Carrier (MAC
Merchant aircraft carriers, or MAC ships, were British and Dutch merchant vessels fitted with flight decks while retaining a commercial cargo role. They carried small air groups to help protect Atlantic convoys, especially against submarines. These were specialized wartime compromises, not fleet carriers intended to fight large carrier battles or sustain substantial strike-aircraft formations. Maintaining a cargo function helped avoid withdrawing every suitable hull from merchant service at a time when shipping capacity was precious. Aviation facilities were necessarily limited compared with a dedicated carrier. The MAC concept therefore represents a carefully chosen compromise in convoy protection, linking ordinary commerce with the specialist skills of naval aircrews and deck personnel.
