Description
Charles Adams-Class Destroyer (DDG
The Charles F. Adams class was an American guided-missile destroyer design introduced during the Cold War. It combined a missile air-defense role with guns, torpedoes, and antisubmarine equipment, reflecting the transition from gun destroyers to electronically coordinated missile warfare. Related ships served foreign navies in national variants. The full class name includes Charles F. Adams rather than simply Charles Adams. Its history was distinct from earlier wartime destroyer classes or with the later Aegis-equipped Arleigh Burke design, whose sensors, launchers, and command systems came from a different technological generation. Australian and West German derivatives illustrate the design’s importance beyond the United States Navy.
