Description
CIM-10 Bomarc SAM
The CIM-10 Bomarc was a long-range American surface-to-air missile developed as part of the Cold War air-defense system. Unlike a simple portable anti-aircraft weapon, it operated from prepared sites and depended on a wider radar and command network. American and Canadian deployments reflected the defense of North America against strategic bomber attack.
Boeing and the Michigan Aeronautical Research Center contributed to the program, reflected in its name. A booster accelerated the missile before ramjet propulsion sustained high-speed flight toward the target area. Bomarc sites worked with the SAGE air-defense network, which coordinated information and interception. Nuclear warheads were associated with operational deployment, creating political controversy in Canada. Changing threats, especially intercontinental ballistic missiles that the system could not counter, reduced its strategic relevance. The system was withdrawn as North American air-defense priorities evolved.
