Description
Danish Peder Skram Coastal Defense Ship
Peder Skram was a Danish coastal-defense ship named for a sixteenth-century admiral. Her design emphasized a heavily armed and armored vessel for regional waters rather than a large ocean-going dreadnought. She belonged to the coastal-defense fleets of smaller European navies whose strategic needs and resources differed from those of the major naval powers. Her later history was shaped by Denmark’s occupation during the Second World War, not by service as a front-line Allied or Axis battleship in major fleet engagements.
Coastal-defense ships offered heavy weapons within the budgets and operating areas of smaller navies. Their tactical usefulness was closely tied to geography, making open-ocean battleship comparisons an incomplete way to assess their intended purpose.
