Description
DB-3F Medium Bomber
The DB-3F was an improved development of the Soviet Ilyushin DB-3 long-range bomber and was redesignated Il-4 during the Second World War. A revised fuselage and other changes distinguished it from earlier examples while preserving the twin-engine bombing role. It served in long-range aviation and in maritime torpedo operations. Its service illustrates the adaptability of an established bomber family under wartime production pressure rather than a wholly new design appearing under an unrelated name. The improved version developed from the DB-3 and became closely associated with the later Il-4 designation. Soviet crews used the family for long-range bombing and naval attack. Its service illustrates the adaptation of an established twin-engine design as range, production, and operational demands evolved through the difficult early years of the war.
