French Panhard 178 Armored Car
The Panhard 178 was a French four-wheel armored reconnaissance vehicle developed before the Second World War. It combined a turreted gun with good road mobility and provision for driving in either direction, useful when withdrawing from a reconnaissance encounter. Vehicles served in the 1940 campaign, and captured examples were reused by Germany. Its reconnaissance purpose distinguished it from heavier French battle tanks, even though it offered more firepower than a lightly armed scout car. Its two driving positions helped a reconnaissance crew withdraw without turning the vehicle around. The turret mounted a 25mm gun, and examples fought during the 1940 campaign. Captured vehicles were subsequently used by German forces, sometimes with modifications for local security or railway duties.
