Indian Cavalry
Indian cavalry formed part of the British Indian Army and served in several theaters during the First World War. Regiments drew on particular regional and recruiting traditions and combined mounted duties with the demands of modern warfare. Some fought in Europe before service in the Middle East and other areas. Indian cavalry units served within the wider imperial army in several theaters. Conditions differed greatly between the Western Front and more mobile campaigns, while horses, forage, remounts, and experienced handlers remained essential to sustaining mounted operations. Indian cavalry divisions remained in France longer than the Indian infantry corps, before redeployment toward Egypt and the Middle East. Their experience therefore connects trench-bound European conditions with campaigns offering different opportunities for movement and mounted operations.
