INS Vikrant (IAC-1) Carrier

INS Vikrant, IAC-1, was developed as India’s first domestically built aircraft carrier. Its construction at Cochin Shipyard represented a major expansion of Indian shipbuilding and naval integration capability. The ski-jump flight deck supports short-takeoff operations with arrested recovery rather than the catapult arrangement of some larger carriers. Commissioned in 2022, it is a different ship from the earlier British-built INS Vikrant that served India for decades. The indigenous carrier’s commissioning in 2022 marked a major milestone, followed by the continuing work of testing aviation facilities, training personnel, and integrating the ship with fleet operations. India’s carrier program also required extensive integration of machinery, aviation facilities, sensors, and weapons.
