Japanese Ki-61 Tony Fighter
The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was a Japanese army fighter whose liquid-cooled inline engine distinguished it from the radial-engined aircraft more commonly associated with Japanese aviation. The Allies called it Tony. It entered combat during the Second World War and served in New Guinea, the Philippines, and the defense of Japan. Engine production, maintenance, and supply difficulties affected operations. The related Ki-100 later used a radial engine, so the two types differed in appearance and development history. The inline engine gave the Ki-61 a different silhouette from the Ki-43 and Ki-44. Tony was an Allied reporting name; Japanese service designations identified the aircraft through the army’s own procurement and classification system.
