Japanese Mitsubishi A5M Claude Fighter
The Mitsubishi A5M, known to Allied reporting as Claude, was a Japanese naval fighter of the late 1930s. It introduced monoplane performance to carrier fighter service while retaining features such as an open cockpit and fixed landing gear. The type fought in China and preceded the more capable A6M Zero. Its history illustrates the rapid development of carrier aviation just before the Pacific War, rather than the standard fighter equipment of Japan throughout the conflict. The A5M fought Chinese opponents before the United States entered the war and helped establish Japanese naval fighter experience. Its maneuverability remained useful, but fixed undercarriage and limited protection reflected an earlier design generation. By the later Pacific campaigns, surviving aircraft were increasingly used for training.
