Japanese Yubari-class Frigate

Japan’s Yubari class comprised small postwar escort vessels developed for the Maritime Self-Defense Force. Their equipment and size suited regional escort and patrol duties rather than the role of a major fleet cruiser. The name recalls the famous interwar cruiser Yubari, but the ships belong to a different era and naval institution.

A small escort could contribute to national maritime defense without matching the endurance or weapons of a large destroyer. Its value depended on operating areas, supporting forces, and the tasks assigned by the navy.

Yubari and Yubetsu entered service in the 1980s. Their comparatively compact hulls accommodated a gun, antiship missiles, and antisubmarine weapons, reflecting Japan’s requirement to protect nearby sea lanes against several kinds of threat.
