Knox-class Frigate

The American Knox class was developed primarily around ocean escort and anti-submarine warfare during the Cold War. Its large bow sonar, helicopter facilities, and other equipment reflected that mission. Originally designated destroyer escorts, the ships were later classified as frigates. Many subsequently served with other navies, extending their careers beyond their original United States Navy employment.

The class used a single-shaft steam propulsion arrangement and a 5-inch gun, with ASROC providing a means of delivering anti-submarine weapons at a distance. The distinctive bow sonar supported its main escort mission. A helicopter hangar and deck enabled aviation to extend the ship’s search area. Changes during service included different missile and close-defense arrangements. The frigate designation followed the 1975 American reclassification, while later foreign service produced additional national modifications and operational roles.
