Kubelwagon
The Volkswagen Kübelwagen Type 82 was a lightweight German military utility vehicle used during the Second World War. Its rear-engine layout and simple body served transport, liaison, and general support duties. It was not armored, and its mobility came from light weight and practical design rather than the heavy protection or tracked running gear of combat vehicles.
Designed through Ferdinand Porsche’s organization from the Volkswagen mechanical foundation, the vehicle entered mass production during the war. Air cooling simplified some maintenance and avoided the need for an engine coolant system in harsh climates. Portal-style rear reduction gearing and a limited-slip differential contributed to useful cross-country performance despite two-wheel drive. It served in Europe, North Africa, and other theaters for headquarters and support work. The amphibious Schwimmwagen was a related development with a different body and capabilities, not another name for the basic Type 82.
