Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank

The German Leopard 2 was developed during the Cold War to replace the Leopard 1 with improved protection, fire control, and a 120mm smoothbore gun. It became a widely exported Western main battle tank, and decades of national upgrades produced many configurations. Later turret shapes and armor packages can differ substantially from early production vehicles. The family’s broad success does not mean that all users field the same electronics, protection, or ammunition. Later versions introduced distinctive additional turret armor and improved guns and electronics. Numerous European and other armies adopted the tank. The tank’s continuing development reflects the importance of maintaining established fleets alongside designing entirely new armored vehicles.
