MIM-14 Nike SAM
The MIM-14 Nike Hercules was an American surface-to-air missile system developed for the defense of important areas against high-altitude aircraft. It succeeded the earlier Nike Ajax and could carry conventional or nuclear warheads. Fixed and semi-fixed battery arrangements, radar guidance, and substantial support equipment made it quite different from a small battlefield shoulder-fired missile. Nike Hercules batteries formed part of a larger radar, communications, and command network, with engagement procedures requiring trained crews and considerable infrastructure. The missile’s size and purpose distinguished it from later portable air-defense weapons. Its history reflects the Cold War expectation of defending cities, bases, and other important areas against strategic air attack.
