Description

Minefield

Minefields became important obstacles in twentieth-century warfare, combining explosive hazards with the threat of observed defensive fire. Anti-tank and anti-personnel mines served different purposes, and fields were laid according to tactical plans rather than as isolated random weapons. Marking, recording, clearing, and protecting minefields were essential military tasks, while unexploded mines also created dangers long after fighting ended.

Engineers laid mines to delay movement, channel attackers into covered routes, and protect vulnerable flanks. Effective obstacles were integrated with observation and fire, since an unguarded field could be breached more easily. Clearance involved probing, detectors, explosive charges, flails, or other specialized equipment, each with limitations. Records and lane marking helped friendly troops move safely, though battlefield disruption could destroy that information. The long-term danger to civilians made postwar clearance an enduring consequence of conflicts in which extensive mine barriers were employed.
