Description
Netherlands Fokker D XXI Fighter
The Fokker D.XXI was a Dutch fighter designed during the 1930s with a fixed undercarriage and robust construction. It served in the defense of the Netherlands and achieved a longer combat career in Finnish service. Its combination of monoplane layout and relatively simple features reflects a transitional period in fighter development before faster retractable-undercarriage designs predominated.
Designed by Erich Schatzki, the fighter first flew in 1936. Its radial engine, fixed wheels, and mixed construction favored straightforward manufacture and operation, although they limited future performance growth. Dutch aircraft fought during the German invasion in May 1940. Finland built additional examples under license and used them during the Winter War and Continuation War. Finnish pilots adapted tactics to local conditions, but newer fighters eventually displaced the type. Its longer northern service contrasts with the brief campaign fought by the original Dutch force.
