Description
Ottoman Hamidiye Cruiser WW1
Hamidiye was an Ottoman protected cruiser built in Britain and commissioned in the early twentieth century. It became particularly famous for raiding during the Balkan Wars under Rauf Bey, disrupting enemy expectations through independent operations. The ship also served through the First World War and continued into the Turkish republican period. Its long career connects the late Ottoman navy with the smaller naval force inherited by modern Turkey. The cruiser’s wartime reputation was shaped by independent operations as well as the changing strategic demands placed on the Ottoman fleet. Its acquisition reflected prewar efforts to modernize a navy with limited resources. Later Turkish service connected the vessel’s imperial origins with the institutions of the republic that succeeded the empire.
