Romeo-class Submarine
The Soviet Romeo class, Project 633, was a conventional diesel-electric submarine design developed after the Whiskey class. It was exported and also influenced Chinese submarine construction. Although less advanced than later nuclear-powered boats, the family served many navies in coastal and regional roles, where affordability and local conditions could outweigh the advantages of oceanic nuclear propulsion. Conventional submarines could remain useful where missions were close to bases and nuclear propulsion was unnecessary or unaffordable. Their crews still needed to manage battery endurance and periods of charging or snorkeling. Romeo-class service therefore reflects both a particular Soviet design and the varied requirements of the countries that adopted or produced related boats.
