Russia Borei-class Ballistic Missile Submarine

The Russian Borei class was developed as a nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine family to replace older Soviet-era strategic boats. Its mission centers on carrying the Bulava missile system on concealed patrols. Borei belongs to the post-Soviet development of Russia’s deterrent fleet, although the program’s origins reach back into the broader technological inheritance of the Cold War. A ballistic-missile submarine’s deterrent value depends on secure patrol procedures, trained crews, communications, and supporting infrastructure as well as its weapons. Borei-class development occurred amid changing Russian industrial and financial conditions. The lead submarine, Yuri Dolgorukiy, entered service in 2013. The class carries the Bulava ballistic missile and forms part of Russia’s replacement of older strategic submarine types.
