Description
Russian N1 Rocket
The Soviet N1 was a super-heavy launch vehicle developed to support an attempt to land cosmonauts on the Moon. Its first stage used a very large cluster of engines, creating difficult problems of control, reliability, and testing. Four launch attempts between 1969 and 1972 failed before the rocket reached orbit. Those failures prevented it from delivering the spacecraft needed for the proposed lunar mission. The program was subsequently abandoned as Soviet crewed lunar-landing ambitions ended. Although unsuccessful, N1 was a real rocket that reached full-scale launch testing. Its history illustrates the extraordinary engineering and industrial demands of the Moon race, alongside the American Saturn V’s successful development.
