Russian T-44/85 Medium Tank

The Soviet T-44 introduced a substantially revised medium-tank layout compared with the T-34, including an arrangement intended to improve internal space and armor balance. The 85mm-armed configuration appeared during the closing phase of the Second World War but did not see combat during that war. Its significance lies chiefly in the development path toward postwar Soviet tanks, especially the T-54 family.

Rearranging the engine and fighting compartment offered a path toward improved armor without simply enlarging an older design. The importance of the T-44 is therefore developmental rather than a record of Second World War combat.

A transverse engine installation helped shorten the engine compartment and allowed the turret to sit nearer the center of the hull. This arrangement was an important departure from the T-34’s layout.
