Russian Tu-28 Fiddler
The Tupolev Tu-128, initially associated with the Tu-28 designation and reported by NATO as Fiddler, was a large Soviet interceptor designed for long-range air-defense tasks. It carried radar and missiles to engage bomber threats over the enormous distances of Soviet territory. Its size and mission differed from lightweight tactical fighters. The aircraft served within the Cold War air-defense system rather than as a conventional strategic bomber, despite its imposing twin-engine appearance. A two-person crew divided flying and interception responsibilities. Operations over northern and sparsely populated regions favored endurance and radar capability more than close-in maneuverability. Later Soviet interceptors improved the ability to defend these distant approaches, gradually replacing the specialized Fiddler in service.
