Saint Chamond Heavy Tank
The French Saint-Chamond was a First World War tank with a long armored body, a powerful 75mm gun, and an innovative petrol-electric transmission. Its relatively short track run created serious difficulties when crossing trenches and rough ground. French units nevertheless employed it in combat, with effectiveness improving when conditions and tactics suited the design. It represents a distinct early tank-development path, different from both the shorter Schneider tank and the later turreted Renault FT. A long hull and heavily projecting gun installation created difficulties when crossing trenches and broken terrain. The electric transmission was an unusual feature of French tank development. Later fighting with better coordination and suitable ground could exploit its artillery, but the design retained important limitations compared with smaller and more adaptable tanks.
