SSBN(X) Columbia-Class Ballistic Submarine

The Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarine was developed to replace the United States Navy’s Ohio-class strategic submarines. Originating under the SSBN(X) designation, the program emphasizes a long service life, nuclear propulsion, and the continuation of a survivable sea-based deterrent. Its missile compartment and related design work also connect with British submarine planning. Development, construction, and future service milestones must be distinguished; a design model should not be assigned a completed operational history before the relevant boats actually enter service. The program was developed to replace the Ohio-class strategic submarine force while preserving a sea-based nuclear deterrent. Its design emphasizes long service life and specialized missile accommodation. Projected capability and construction milestones should remain distinct from a completed operational career, since a new strategic class develops over many years.
