Submarine Base
Submarine bases combined sheltered access, repair facilities, torpedo and fuel supply, crew accommodation, and communications. During the world wars, forward bases shortened transit times and supported repeated patrols, making them important strategic targets. Some received massive protective shelters, but bases also depended on vulnerable rail, power, transport, and workshop networks. Submarine facilities combined berths with maintenance shops, torpedo storage, fuel, and trained technical personnel. Concrete pens protected boats in selected bases, but campaigns against transport links and support infrastructure could still disrupt their ability to sustain operations. A forward base could increase time spent on patrol by reducing the journey to operating waters. Conversely, loss of a base might force boats to travel farther, consuming fuel and crew endurance before reaching their assigned area.
