Swiss Mountain Infantry WW1
Swiss soldiers trained to defend difficult mountain terrain while Switzerland maintained neutrality during the First World War. Border mobilization, prepared positions, observation, and the protection of Alpine routes occupied the army despite the absence of a Swiss battlefield campaign. Mountain movement required physical conditioning and specialized logistical arrangements. The force’s history belongs to deterrence and national defense, not participation alongside one of the belligerent coalitions merely because neighboring armies used similar equipment. Neutral mobilization still imposed costs on families, industry, and the national economy. Repeated periods of service and defensive preparations made the war a major experience even without a Swiss expeditionary campaign.
