Trieste Landing Helicopter Dock

The Italian Trieste was developed as a large amphibious assault ship with aviation facilities and a well deck. It combines support for landing forces with helicopter operations and the potential to operate suitable short-takeoff or vertical-landing aircraft. Its design belongs to modern expeditionary naval operations rather than the history of Second World War fleet carriers.

Built by Fincantieri, the ship entered Italian naval service in 2024 and expanded the country’s amphibious and aviation support capacity. The large hull accommodates troops, vehicles, medical facilities, and command functions alongside aircraft operations. A well deck supports landing craft, while the flight deck enables helicopter movement of personnel and supplies. Facilities associated with F-35B operation distinguish it from a helicopter-only platform. Trieste’s role is broader than a flight deck alone, combining sea-based support for military deployments and humanitarian or disaster-response missions.
