Type 2 Ka-Mi Amphibious Tank
The Japanese Type 2 Ka-Mi was an amphibious tank developed for naval landing forces. Detachable flotation structures allowed it to operate in water before continuing ashore as a tracked vehicle. Its small gun and light protection reflected the compromises of amphibious design. It entered service during the Second World War but did not become a large force capable of reversing Japan’s deteriorating Pacific position. Detachable flotation equipment enabled sea movement, while propellers supported propulsion in water. After reaching shore, the floats could be removed for land operations. The Ka-Mi was used during Japan’s defensive island fighting, where difficult conditions often limited the amphibious capability imagined by its designers.
